Challenge by Goldhirsh Foundation

LA is the best place to create

How would you use $100K to make LA the best place to create?

How would you use $100,000 to make LA2050 the best place to create? Submit an application for your chance to make it happen in 2014.

The Specifics

We are pleased to announce the two winners who will each receive $100,000 to implement their projects:

In LA2050, our region will empower its residents to harness their creativity by fostering entrepreneurship, cultural diversity, and inclusivity.

In 2050, Los Angeles will continue to play host to the largest concentration of working artists in the nation and provide support to maintain (and build) its robust collection of arts establishments. It will lead the nation in manufacturing and become an international leader in technology and innovation. Our region will be a center for entrepreneurial activity that creates jobs and generates wealth for a diverse, flexible, and talented workforce. LA’s business community will reflect the diversity of our region, enhancing our international business opportunities.

LA2050 Metrics (Shaped by YOU):

  • Employment in creative industries
  • Arts establishments per capita
  • Concentration of manufacturing activity in LA
  • Federal research grant funding
  • Patents per capita
  • Jobs per capita
  • Minority- and women-owned firms
  • Gini coefficient
  • Number of high-growth startups
  • Venture capital investment
  • Measures of cultural and global economic influence (“soft power”) (Dream Metric)
  • Recruiting and retention rates at local higher education institutions (Dream Metric)
  • Percentage of graduates from local higher education institutions that remain in LA County 5 years after graduating (Dream Metric)
  • Unemployment rates (and opportunities) for the formerly incarcerated (Dream Metric)

Tell us how your idea, project, or program can help Los Angeles become the best place in the world to create.

Submit an application between Tuesday, July 1st, 2014 (noon Pacific Daylight Time) and Thursday, July 31st, 2014 (noon Pacific Daylight Time). Your application will go through a moderation process to ensure that your project adheres to all challenge rules. From Tuesday, September 2nd, 2014 (noon Pacific Daylight Time) to Tuesday, September 16th, 2014 (noon Pacific Daylight Time), we’ll open challenge submissions to public voting. Rally your colleagues and friends to get behind your effort and join the public in selecting the winners.

TWO WAYS TO WIN:

  • TOP VOTED: The top voted project will receive $100,000 to implement their idea
  • JURY VOTED: One project will be selected by a panel of judges to receive $100,000 to implement their idea

More details on the challenge and winner rules can be found under Rules & Regulations.

And don’t forget to get your application in early! LA2050 will showcase submissions as they are accepted up until voting begins (between Tuesday, July 1st, 2014 and Friday, August 29th, 2014).

A shared vision for the future of LA is an important first step to making progress. Now, we want to hear your ideas on how we can make that vision a reality.

Connect with LA2050 on LA2050.org, Twitter, and Facebook and join the conversation via #LA2050.

one of our staff had the following issue in attempting to make a comment on our submission page:

"Signed in with Facebook but they asked to make a username and password for the website.

No matter what username I used it was "already taken" this is impossible because I tried some very strange combinations of random letters and numbers after trying every other conceivable identifier I could use.

So it may be that the site is broken, or that it doesn't support iPhone browsing."

Please advise

Anyone else out there locked out from application submission? Due to technical difficulties please chime in. I would like to feel not so inferior and computer illiterate due to operator stupidity

Every website url I have tried to enter has given me "Wrong format" error including the facebook.com page does this mean I can submit and disqualified on a technicallity ?

I just lost my submission right before the deadline. I got an error message after I hit submit saying the EIN# needed to be a number, I'd included the dash. Went to fix it and my embedded video was gone and then my application disappeared. Please, please, figure out a way to have the program save an application. This is hours and days of our time put into this. Not time to copy and paste every single entry.

Excellent question! Submissions are only visible publicly once they have been moderated and approved. Due to the high number of submissions we received, we are anticipating up to a two-week moderation period. Once your project is reviewed you should get an email notification. If approved, your submission will become visible on the site at that time. If you have any other questions feel free to check out our FAQs(see link below) ask here, or send us an email at maker@goodinc.com!

Thanks for participating!

Great question! Once you submit your idea it will not be visible publicly until it is moderated and is approved. You should receive an e-mail notification once that happens. If you did not get an initial confirmation when you submitted, make sure check your spam folders. If you have any further questions regarding this you can always e-mail us at maker@goodinc.com

by LFatone

Great question! At this time you cannot save a draft of the form without submitting it. If you want to work on your submission offline we suggest saving the submission form questions into a google or word doc. You can also e-mail us at maker@goodinc.com and we can send you a document with the submission questions in it.
