What is your idea/project in more detail?

:

Each lesson plan is carefully crafted to take students somewhere around the world where they can identify with people just like them. From Mexico, to Kenya, Hawaii, Brazil, Israel, India, Haiti and more, children learn arts, language and cultural understanding so they can begin to grasp how they are part of a global family.

“I often say I am a poster child for early arts education. What I learned was not only about being

What will you do to implement this idea/project?

:

Dream A World Education founder, Grammy Award-Winner Bunny Hull brings a team of professional artists to your school. Through this six-week multi-arts residency, children learn music, dance, theatre and visual arts and discover the gifts that live within them. They learn the values of friendship, kindness, imagination and gratitude, as well as history, geography and social studies as they relate to each arts workshop. The residency includes a parent workshop, professional development, curriculum materials, a live performance, and culminates with a children’s presentation. Each week a performer/teaching artist from the initial performance brings a new art form to your school. Music curriculum kicks it off with the creation of an original class song with each class. Each class receives a recorded version of their song.

The Secrets of the Heart’s curriculum guide for K-2 links the arts experience to academic achievement and critical thinking skills in Language Arts, Listening/Speaking, History, Social Studies and the development of interpersonal skills. This program reveals the arts to children as it relates to culture and tradition, gives them a little geography and history and teaches them, through self-expression, how to have greater respect for themselves and each other.

This program is created to VAPA and Common Core Standards.

HOW WILL YOUR IDEA/PROJECT HELP MAKE LA THE BEST PLACE TO LEARN TODAY? IN 2050?

:

Research indicates that more than 80% of the children in Los Angeles schools are Title One – below the poverty line. The high school drop out rate in 2008 was reported at 62%.

Every choice a child makes is based on how they perceive themselves and the world around them. It impacts their attitudes, the relationships they forge, and the way they interact with their families and figures of authority.

There’s a good reason why Dream A World Education focuses attention on children K-2. Early lessons have a lasting impact on a child. It is said that all the milestones relating to a child’s development happen before a child turns six. Their brain is like a sponge and a memory bank for all that enters their senses. Along with coordination, poise and stamina, patterns are formed, skills developed and the understanding of concepts and vocabulary are learned. This is the age when children learn the difference between right and wrong. It’s a time when social relationships are developed as they interact with each other and new adults as they are introduced into a school setting.

It is our aim to reach children in these most formative years. It’s true that the healthy evolution of a child depends on more than just their school experiences. They need a solid support system at home. Some children may or may not have that support, but we believe one unforgettable experience can change a life. It is our intention to provide that experience for every child we meet.

Whom will your project benefit? Please be specific.

:

1. We Identify The Need

We target schools that have not only a need, but a real desire for arts programming, especially those schools which are underserved. It’s important to us to work closely with principals and teachers to create a warm environment that inspires an exchange of learning and an atmosphere of cooperation.

2. We Know Who We Serve

Particular attention is paid to the population we are serving, their cultural background and to the educational, emotional or special needs of the children. Whether our program lasts for one day or six weeks, our goal is to recognize the individuality of each child.

3. We Consult With Educators

We are constantly meeting with exceptional elementary educators to determine what children need, what works with existing curriculum and to explore new ways to improve our programming. We have a lot to learn from each other. In addition, there is an emphasis on consulting with other arts organizations to share and compare ideas in order to achieve the most effective lesson plans and highest level of excellence for our teaching artists.

4. We Know Where We’re Going

It is the intention of Dream A World® to base our educational work in the Los Angeles area, and to then expand that outreach by targeting and identifying areas in the national and global community where our programs can be beneficial. Our future plans include developing educational programming for parents.

Please identify any partners or collaborators who will work with you on this project.

Starting with early childhood education, by introducing the arts and understanding of universal values, Dream A World Education, Inc. brings arts to low-income students in Los Angeles with very unique programs that address the whole child. This organization is one-of-a kind in the field of arts education in that it uses the arts to directly address the soclal-emotional needs of children and teach them cultural understanding in their early formative years. They do this by using multidisciplinary arts disciplines to teach values and life-skills, nurturing children’s creativity and individuality and giving them specific tools which they can use over a lifetime to help them lead whole, healthy and successful lives.

We want children to know they have dreams and ambitions to keep them in school, to give them direction through their imagination and exploration of the arts. They will year after year obtain, reach academic goals, stay in school, and achieve their dreams. That is the dream of Dream A World Education, Inc.

Assessing the Results

There is an ongoing assessment of the children based on rubrics created for each workshop in the program. After each residency is completed there is a culmination and further assessment of the children’s participation, via the journals, and curriculum guides, a debriefing with teachers, the school’s principal and with the teaching artists involved to determine the impact we have had on the children. We are constantly looking for ways to improve what we’re doing. Based on these assessments, we are able to maximize the effectiveness of each program.

Dream A World Education is the best organization I work with. It is a great art program but so much more. Secret of the Heart changes young student's life, family, school and then whole community one at the time. Secrets of the Heart and it's continuation Passport To The Heart, our year long program for kindergarten has given us the framework to connect multi-disciplinary arts: music, dance, theatre and visual arts with universal principles and life skills. As the only program of its kind in Los Angeles we continue to grow, add professional teaching artists to our staff and create curriculum that gives children a chance to explore who the are and how they express themselves an innovative, unique way. We have already proven the importance of what we do. We already have testimonials from teachers, principals, parents, superintendents and from the children themselves. We're ready to take this to the next level. We have shown consistent growth financially and creatively each an every year, doubling our programming this year.

We've explored songwriting, African music and dance, storytelling and Diego Rivera paintings and hats and headdresses from around the world, through workshops that defined our initial "secrets:" friendship and a smile, kindness, imagination and be thankful through engaging children in the creative process. Through the Passport program children have discovered world cultures through music and dance and learned about courage, creativity, love, peace, giving, family and happiness. They've learned about what's most important in life. We've done all this with our youngest students, with 5 year olds, when it is most important.

As they move from kindergarten to 1st grade they will continue their quest for the "art of living" by exploring more cultures from around the world and more "secrets" like respect, generosity, cooperation, truth, intelligence. They will learn rhythms, languages, songs from places around the globe. They will begin to understand more fully the meaning of being connected with the people of Earth. People who speak different languages and dress and look differently, but are the same in many ways.

As our students move through grade levels they will learn skill-based arts continuing to explore who they are and how they connect with the world around them. As curriculum is created for each grade level, in third grade they will be introduced to a yearlong photography residency where they begin to tell their story in photographs. How are we the same? How are we different? As themes are established and curriculum evolves programming will continue to create a path of discovery that lasts throughout their elementary school years, the most formative years of their lives. Parent will be involved every step of the way and through yearly professional development teachers will be left with new skills to enhance the lives of their students.

What will the result be? Students who understand how unique they are and that they were born with gifts their world needs. Children who have identified their skills, their passions, are who believe in their ability to make a difference. Children who have learned to problem solve, to make right choices, to follow their dreams and who are on track to lead productive, successful lives. Students who will be innovators, creators, architects, artists, engineers, scientists, mathematicians, teachers, mothers, fathers who are ready to dare…to Dream A World…their world.

To all those who have voted, we thank you for continuing to believe in our mission... and to 2050 for creating an opportunity for others to know about the GOOD to which we are dedicated. May all your dreams come true!

It's a thrill to be a part of the LA 2050 challenge to bring awareness to so many incredible organizations working for the GOOD of our great city and the children and adults who make it what it is. What an opportunity to bring awareness the diverse ways that we can make our world a better place. This coming week on Monday we continue to bring our programming into Esperanza Elementary. First up is Ashley Maher, who will work with 175 kindergartners in classes of 25, to teach the art of friendship through the art of songwriting. What makes a friendship? How do you treat your friends? Teaching children how to build sound relationships and treat each other with kindness by exploring the idea through words and music. Exceptional!

Today was our last rehearsal and tomorrow we present our opening performance of Secrets of the Heart.
We're focusing on sharing our gifts with the 175 kindergarten students we will meet tomorrow, special needs students included. And next week….we begin music workshops in classes of 25 each, as each group creates and original song about what makes a friendship. It's so inspiring to work with these children.

I have been working with Dream A World for over 5 years now and as Programming Director I see the joy the program brings to the students we serve. Coming from Kenya, I wish I had a program like this when I was in nursery school! I started in Music an Dance when I was in High School, however I knew I had a passion for it at the tender age of 5/6. My parents paid school fees for all 8 of their children and couldn't afford to pay for Art classes in dance, music or theater. For me being able to serve children at the tender age of 5/6 is giving back in a way, because I got opportunities that many didn't have. I love my work!!

While after school programs are important and needed we believe in the value of delivering arts during school hours. ALL of our innovative programs are aligned with Common Core curriculum and the Visual and Performing Arts Standards for the State of California. Lesson plans are carefully designed to utilize music, dance, theatre arts and visual art to enhance language arts, vocabulary, geography and social-emotional development.

Our first Professional Development for 45 teachers was attended by a group of bright and energetic teachers at Esperanza Elementary yesterday. We met with our 8 teachers after the PD, 2 T-K, 5 K and one special needs teacher and delivered our hardcover Young Masters Little Wisdom books and CDs, along with the children's journals. Next Wednesday our team creates magic with our opening performance. Our team at Esperanza is Ashley Maher, Anindo Marshall, Elayn J. Taylor and Dr. Dawn Norfleet. This is our biggest program ever.

If we don't raise children who value themselves and believe "they are somebody" it won't matter how much math, or science or technology we teach them. Children who have been wholly developed can and will make a meaningful difference in our world because they will have learned how to think and feel, how to be compassionate and kinder to each other. How do you raise a whole child? You teach basic values in a way that is innovative and fun…yes fun. We use the arts and an innovative curriculum that is loved by children, teachers and parents. Our vision by 2050 is not only to have prospered our city, but to have prospered our state, our country and our world. We're all connected.

This is the most incredible program that I have ever seen. My background is the visual arts where I have been connected for 50 years.

Dream A World Education program has given so much to the children that they have offered their program.
It opens their horizon of life. Gives them the opportunity to connect with a philosophy of life of interacting,
love and understanding of higher goals. This will give them the opportunity that they may not have in their lives in the inner city. AND all the while having fun and expanding their universe.

Art is what defines a culture. Without art, what are we?

I use Dream A World as a way to introduce Peace at the beginning of the school year. Art, music, dance, and theatre help bring this concept alive in a meaningful way that touches the hearts of our students. Thank you.

I have voltunteered with the Secrets Of The Heart Program along with my staff. I must say it has been inspiring to watch the faces of these young children as they learn the gifts of kindness, imagination, friendship and gratitude done in the context of history, geography and social studies. Truly these are gifts which are so desperately needed to be learned. Wisdom learned through the arts! I only wish this program existed when my own children were young! Art, academic achievement, critical thinking and respect for one another. A winning combination!

This is a fabulous organization. I know from first hand experience volunteering a couple of times. The students love participating, and their enthusiasm is evident. Everyone feels that they are important individuals and even at their young ages, they have wonderful positive feelings of kindness, love and being thankful towards all other people, no matter how different they may be. Bunny, Diane and all the incredible instructors are so talented in music, dance, art and self empowerment. Dream A World is helping to fill in the gap of art, music, kindness and self expression that is so lacking in our public schools.

I have seen Dream A World in action and this program is changing lives for Good. The format of education is empowering, equalizing, and gives voice to the individual child in a unique way of love and respect. Using arts in this way in for the children of Los Angeles should be in every school! I also love the ongoing nature of this "curriculum" and how it continues to bring out the gifts of each child.

This is my second "season" working for Secrets of the Heart, performing in their show and teaching songwriting. Every second of the time in the classroom felt so enriching for these children. At the culmination, I will never forget the Hispanic parents who followed me out into the parking lot to tell me personally that the workshops had had a profound impact on their son, who sang the songs, talked about being a "young master" and was seemed to gain enormously in confidence as a result of participating. It is beautiful program…. full of Heart and life-forming principles.

This extraordinary program is committed to it's mission of teaching the youngest of minds and hearts positive and powerful values by using the impact of several art forms. These enlightened spirits will then become our hope toward the transformation of our planet. As a teaching artist with Dream A World, this is one of the most important works of my career. Visionary, Bunny Hull, designed The Secrets Of The Heart six week residency to have a lifelong impact on these precious children - to live there lives in a manner that will make a difference in this world. In turn, this becomes a win/win not only for all of us now, but for generations to come. What can be more important??

I can't say enough about this wonderful and unique program. As a founding member, it has been a privilege to work as a Teaching Artist with Secrets of the Heart since it's inception, 5 years ago. I aid in guiding the children in discovering and exploring their "imagination" and teaching them how to use that imagination in the art of storytelling. It's thrilling to see their eyes light up with excitement as they begin to understand that their imagination is boundless. I witness how their sense of empowerment and self esteem grow as they begin to realize their ideas are important and can make a big difference in their worlds. Very shy students begin to express themselves more freely and openly as they realize there are never any "wrong" ideas. The workshops are great fun and the kids learn a lot about their special gifts, like their imagination, kindness, friendship. This is a brilliant program that more kids need to experience..I am blessed to be involved.

As Founder and Executive Director of Dream A World Education my inspiration to give what I had learned to others came from a successful life in music. I'm a poster child for the arts. I began by studying dance and piano from the age of 5 years old. After working as a dancer for several years I continued to purse my interest in music. With years of dedication to what I loved my career evolved and I became a Grammy-award winning songwriter and vocalist, working with Quincy Jones, Michael Jackson and writing for film and television. Although I worked as a creative artist, I additionally administered the publishing company BrassHeart Music that housed my catalog. The music industry was my life until working with a group of children in 1994 inspired me. At this time, my life took a turn I didn’t expect. It took years to become proficient in this new world - learning curriculum, school standards, incorporation, administrative regulations and non-profit agility. I have done so with great joy, impassioned by the children and the work itself. This school year Dream A World Education will serve approximately 1400 children. This is only the beginning. We are worthy of LA2050's investment in the future of Los Angeles.

Dream A World Education's Secrets of the Heart program is the only program of it's kind in Los Angeles. There is no program that targets kindergarten with arts...and so intentionally with life skills and values. Research shows that what children are taught at an early age becomes second nature to them. How do we keep children from joining gangs to feel like they belong? We teach them they are born with gifts and we teach them that the world needs what they have to offer. And..we engage their parents and teachers with that same message. Dream A World Education is changing the fiber of our city.

In a perfect world all children would experience love, creativity, encouragement, friendship and the promise of a peaceful life. The arts programming that Dream a World Education brings to schools in underserved communities exposes children to these basic principles many of us take for granted in our own families and communities. Once the program works its magic in a school, the parents realize they and their children can realize their potential. The students, parents, teachers and communities all benefit. Please help support this worthy organization for the LA2050 grant challenge. Its impact on each student and family is truly changing Los Angeles in a way that no other organization does. Adaawe is an female percussion and vocal group who perform African music and dance. They are magnificent and she brings part of that magnificence to our children teaching music and songwriting. Phylliss has two young children of her own and she understands the intrinsic value of this work. So grateful to have her on board.

Ashley Maher is one of our extraordinary teaching artists. She's known in her field as a "world, folk and jazz" A vocalist and songwriter. She is also a dancer, who specializes in African dance. She speaks not only English but three other languages. All of our artists are exceptionally gifted and have been trained to teach kindergarten and 1st grade. Our ongoing professional development for teachers allows them to know what the work looks like through the eyes of five and six year old. From performance, to workshops, to the children's culmination they bring not only the arts, but light, joy and love into the lives of their students who have never experienced anything like this. As one of our classroom teachers said about the children, "it's a whole new world for them."

Thank you. Yes, passion and joy! Creativity empowers children to discover the beauty of their own individuality, teaches them to problem solve and empowers them to make better choices. Whether a child decides to embark on a career in the arts or not makes no difference. The arts flip the creativity switch and creativity fuels innovation in every field, in every endeavor. Our programs "flip the switch" in a most amazing way.

We initiate a family art project. It's a dream board or vision board, a collage made of words, pictures and drawings. Parents identify their dreams and discuss with their children. Children bring home a secret of the heart each week and they talk about how that secret of the heart can help them achieve their dreams. How can you use friendship and a smile, kindness, imagination and gratitude to achieve your dreams?
We display them at our final culmination. It's a work of art. It's a communication tool.

How do you choose your schools?

by stonetemple

Many of our schools come to us from word of mouth, principals talking with other principals or teachers talking with teachers. But we do have a criteria that must be met as we are presently providing some funding to help these schools bring our program in. Schools must have a passion for the arts, principals must be totally on board and teachers must be willing to collaborate with us to maximize the effectiveness of the program. There must also be a minimum of three classes with whom we can work. We are currently working with one Councilmember and one Supervisor to help identify schools that will be good matches for us. So we are always looking for schools who are a match.

Thank you for your recognition fiddlesticks. I can tell you know the program well based on your comments.
One parent from Braddock Elementary told me that before our program she asked her daughter what friendship meant and she said she didn't know. She then told me that our program made her realize, through creating their dream board together, that she wasn't spending enough time with her daughter. She further said that her daughter not only now knew what friendship was, but knew what kindness, imagination and being thankful meant. Priceless!

I agree. My opinion is that programs that take place during school hours reinforce the importance of what you're teaching. To be taught arts in a more structured, disciplined framework adds to its value in the mind of a child. Also, you have your entire classroom participating instead of just those who stay for after school programs.

by stonetemple

Thank you drichmond! Introducing social emotional skills in a very direct way is one of the things that makes our program unique. We pair a universal value with each art form. It's a balance of creativity and compassion. Initially the Secrets of the Heart program pairs music/songwriting with friendship and a smile, then dance with kindness, theatre arts/storytelling with imagination and visual arts with being thankful. Then the next phase of the program which follows once a month takes classes through to the end of the school year with: creativity, courage, love, peace, giving, family, beauty and happiness. So its a year long program. Then the One World Drum Circle program which follows in 1st grade will continue with respect, compassion, truth, cooperation, generosity, intelligence and honesty. The world cultures explore include: China, Ireland, Africa, South America, Central America, Native American (Ojibwe)and Australia (Aboriginal). It's a very comprehensive curriculum.
