What is your idea/project in more detail?

This project is a logical extension of our mission to empower the aging population to manage their own health, stay active, and lead more fulfilling lives. Our goal is to obtain a safe and workable environment where we can provide year-round theatre arts programming including audience-pleasing musical and theatre productions, workshops, and classes that benefit all communities. We know that theatre brings together many arts experiences that offer health and social benefits. For example, there’s acting (imagination), dancing (physical movement), singing (memory), and music (relationships). Important too, is the fact that these experiences enrich the soul, stimulate the mind, and promote wellness and social participation in Los Angeles.

What will you do to implement this idea/project?

We will solicit sponsorships from corporations, use social media and YouTube, fundraising events and programs, submit grant applications, stay in the public eye through publicity, community outreach, motivational seminars, workshops with community partners, enlisting celebrity seniors in our mission, engage the officials of the city of Los Angeles.

How will your idea/project help make LA the best place to play today? In 2050?

According to Bonnie L. Vorenberg, President of ArtAge and a nationally recognized expert in senior theatre, and according to AARP, senior theatre is one of the fastest-growing recreation and culture trends in the country. Los Angeles stands to benefit from this growing trend with the niche entertainment that Senior Star Power offers. The city is already actively involved in supporting theatre venues as a key component in all arts- and culture-promotion projects with a special emphasis on Hollywood and the downtown Broadway areas. It was noted recently that Los Angeles saw a record-breaking 42.1 million visitors in 2013, a factor which will drive city investment in tourism in years to come. With the influx of new and innovative creative theatre, LA can reach the 50 million+ visitors goal. A case in point: In 2012, Branson, Missouri welcomed over 7.3 million visitors. Tourism is the Branson/Lakes Area's chief industry, with an estimated $2.9 billion in tourism-related spending in 2012. Average age of visitors was 58 years. 79% of activities participated in were shows. Senior Star Power can bring these tourists and their spending power to Los Angeles.

Whom will your project benefit? Please be specific.

Senior Star Power's project will directly benefit the aging population of 60+ years and indirectly benefit the entire Los Angeles community. There’s no doubt that all of these aging adults wish to keep active and vital. Along with this wish, comes, for many in Los Angeles, a strong interest in activities structured around entertainment and performing arts, especially theatre. Senior citizens now account for 20 of every 100 adults of working age in the greater Los Angeles area, and by 2034, that number will reach 36 of every 100 adults. That’s a gain of nearly 1 million senior citizens in the area. By 2050 it is projected that the number will be 50 of every 100 adults.

Please identify any partners or collaborators who will work with you on this project.

We will engage all government, civic, education, nonprofit, and faith-based organizations to participate in our activities. We will also work with local travel and hospitality businesses to develop tourist packages including lodging, bus tours, dining, shopping, and other entertainment attractions that will encourage visitors to stay multiple days in the city.

How will your project impact the LA2050 "PLAY" metrics?

Access to open space and park facilities

Number of children enrolled in afterschool programs

Per capita crime rates

Percentage of residents that feel safe in their neighborhoods

Attendance at major league sporting events

Residents within 1⁄4 mile of a park (Dream Metric)

Number of residents with easy access to a “vibrant” park (Dream Metric)

Number of parks with intergenerational play opportunities (Dream Metric)

Number (and quality) of informal spaces for play (Dream Metric)

If other, please specify.:

Provide a permenant Senior Theatrical Arts & Cultural Complex

Please elaborate on how your project will impact the above metrics.:

Senior Star Power's Senior Theatrical Arts & Cultural Complex will provide a safe environment for the well-being of the aging community. Senior Star Power is a California 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that provides live theatrical entertainment, special events, and theatre arts-related workshops and classes. We focus primarily on:
• Providing regular live theatrical entertainment showcasing mature performers;
• Providing regular live theatre arts educational programs that benefit the community at large; and,
• Offering arts-based evidence-based programming and services that empower older adults to become more active in managing their own wellness and health care. Workshops include: GET UP, GET OUT, AND GET A LIFE! Proving that age is only a number, COMEDY TODAY Laughter is medicine for the body and soul, EXPRESS YOURSELF! A fun and energetic improvisation class, FINDING YOUR VOICE Singing for fun and perhaps a 2nd career, DANCING FOR THE YOUNG-AT-HEART Beginning tappers, WRITING FOR FUN Put the colors of your life down in black and white, TAP YOUR TROUBLES AWAY Intermediate & advanced dance.

Please select which other LA2050 Goals are relevant to your project or organization (check all that apply):

LA is the best place to LEARN

LA is the best place to CREATE

LA is the best place to CONNECT

LA is the healthiest place to LIVE

Please explain how you will evaluate your project.

1. Sold out performances
2. Number of tours generated
3. Overwhelming response of attendees to workshops and classes
4. The number of seniors inspired to live longer and healthier lives.
5. Number of senior rejuvenating their careers and reinventing their lives.
6. Number of businesses in proximity to the Senior Theatrical Arts & Cultural Complex energized and flourishing

What two lessons have informed your solution or project?

1. Evidence that the aging population is increasing at a fast rate and requires more services directed to their tastes and needs. There is no theatrical complex in Los Angeles dedicated to this mission.

2. The fact that this increasing population is living longer means that there is a more urgent need for a facility that inspires and motivates like Senior Star Power's Senior Theatrical Arts & Cultural Complex.

Explain how implementing your project within the next twelve months is an achievable goal.

Senior Star Power has a track record of 3 sold out musical productions as a for profit company. Senior Star Power produced 2 sold out musical productions under our 501(c)(3) nonprofit. These 5 productions we all performed in different rentals theatres. Our first goal is to acquire a donated facility for the 2015 production and our workshops. We have all our teachers in place and the production team in place.

Please list at least two major barriers/challenges you anticipate. What is your strategy for ensuring a successful implementation?

1. Acquiring the necessary funding and facility to proceed.

2. Making people aware of the aging population's need to be kept active and engaged in community and wellness.

What resources does your project need? (check all that apply)

Money (financial capital)

Volunteers/staff (human capital)

Publicity/awareness (social capital)

Infrastructure (building/space/vehicles, etc.)

Technical infrastructure (computers, etc.)

Community outreach

Network/relationship support

Quality improvement research

The Pink Lady is a vibrant, intelligent energetic and enthusiastic woman. She is an inspiration not only to seniors such as myself; but younger people as well. I look forward to her next show and know that it will be as amazing as she and her cast is! How wonderful it will be for Star Power to have a permanent home within the community, we will all support this wonderful venture.

I love all things Pink Lady. What a wonderful Los Angeles Citizen. She cares deeply about all people and brings joy with her where ever she goes. This is perfect not only for Seniors but for the whole community.

I believe it is a wonderful idea to provide an enriched environment where seniors can express their gifts. I recognized the "Pink Lady" at an event from her commercials and was compelled to support this project. There are so many seniors who are considered of no value, we would not be able to enjoy some of the things we do without the sacrifices made by our seniors! Go Seniors! Give them a place to express their happiness.

Pink Lady is such a wonderful role model and my shero! What she has accomplished is short of amazeballs and what she plans on doing for the artistic senior community in Los Angeles is a wonderful and inspiring project that's much needed in this city. I only hope once she wins this grant she'll take this program nation-wide.
