Through a variety of disciplines in the performing, visual, and culinary arts, C3 will encourage health and wellness through diverse programs that spark engagement and creativity.

EDUCATION
C3 will feature programs designed for different age groups under each of the subject areas. Examples of these are music (Mommy & Me, music production), dance (stretching, yoga, and a variety of dance disciplines), visual arts (drawing, graphic design, ceramics), and culinary arts (nutrition, healthy cooking).

Additional classes and groups will also be offered based on the interests of volunteers and the identified needs of the community. For example, if parents are interested in forming support groups or play groups, the Center can provide a space for them. If qualified volunteers wish to provide classes in subjects they care about such as financial literacy, computer basics, or resume building, the Center can afford them the opportunity to do so.

ENRICHMENT
In addition, the Center will include a cafe and common area where people can congregate and connect. It will be a place where students can complete school work while waiting for classes to begin, parents can meet up to exchange advice and experiences, seniors can gather to socialize, and the community at large is welcome to come together. The cafe will also provide job opportunities and give students in the culinary arts classes the opportunity to gain valuable hands on experience in food service and preparation.

True to Culture Shock LA's passion for community service, the Center will also promote projects to support the local community. Planning service opportunities appropriate for all ages, C3 will bring together volunteers and engage them in activities that improve their neighborhoods.

ENTERTAIN
C3 would be the community hub providing meeting space for community discussions, performances, and gatherings. Our goal is for the Center to be a safe space where, through the creative, connecting, and learning process, community members and leaders can improve their well-being and exchange ideas on how to create a vibrant Los Angeles.

Please explain how you will evaluate your work.

For the past 17 years I've had the honor and privilege of working with an amazing group of dancers/artists, educators, and leaders through our non-profit dance organization Culture Shock Los Angeles. They have inspired me to become a better person, given me the tools that have helped shape the artist and clinician I am today, and have been a source of love & support through both the joys & challenges of my life. Through our purpose-driven art, our benefit shows, dance workshops, youth dance programs Future Shock LA, Mighty Shock LA, Future Shock LA, Mini Shock LA, and our after-school & community dance education and enrichment programs, they truly embody the concept of “ART with HEART" and CHOOSING to make positive difference with their time & talents.

This $100,000 grant would be LIFE-CHANGING for our organization and the under-served communities we outreach to each day.

We've been working to realize our dream of opening a multi-generational, arts-focused community center for many years and winning this grant could make this dream a reality.

I've been a part of the Culture Shock LA family for five seasons now and every year continues to bring more joy and happiness to so many lives. I can see the effects all the way from the kids in our after-school programs and assemblies to the audience members that watch our benefit shows. I was an audience member before I became a part of the family, and I can easily say that if I hadn't gone to that show (Which-a-Way 2011), I would be a completely different person today. Culture Shock has opened up many doors for me and I cannot thank this organization enough for how much it has impacted my life. I love CSLA

Culture Shock LA changes lives, and it has undoubtedly changed mine for the better. Through the opportunities awarded to me as a member of this organization, I have become a stronger dancer, a more confident leader, an artist, a more compassionate friend and teammate, and a teacher and I have found purpose and drive. This team is filled with such incredibly talented dancers, but more importantly, phenomenal human beings who are committed to bringing positive change to the arts scene and into the lives of the young artists we work with. Our our strong collective determination to spread our passion for dance are what make this organization truly extraordinary and beautiful, and I am so thankful to be a part of it.

C3 would change our lives and would enhance our ability to reach young people and our community. Please vote for us to help us to keep encouraging creativity, building self-confidence, and giving people a sense of worth and purpose. Thank you for your support!

A little over 12 years ago, I watched my first dance show, a dance showcase hosted by the Culture Shock organization. Little did I know that 12 years later, I would be fully integrated in the program, directing the youth and helping with the countless outreach programs they have. I am so fortunate to have my dance career be full circle with this organization...this family. Thank you, Culture Shock, for inspiring people like me to utilize dance as more than just a performing art. I am forever changed for the better because of your impact in this world.

Being part of Culture Shock LA was one of the best experiences in my life. It's rare to find a community of dancers and artists who want to use art for social good. There may be others who attempt to do the same thing, but I haven't seen it done as much dedication and commitment as CSLA has continued to do so for so many years. Seeing them have their own space to expand what they're already doing and reach more people would be like an extension of my own dream. I vote yes!

Culture Shock LA has impacted many lives in the most positive way imaginable, including my own. Winning the award and building C3 means that this organization will have a place that allows for them to fully reach the potential of their mission. The next level for this non profit is a true center for the arts that is fully owned and operated by them, providing a safe environment for their youth outreach programs. I have no doubt that C3 and Culture Shock LA will connect the community in a new and exciting way!

You can tell how amazing of an organization CSLA, just by looking at the wave of positive comments below. Being a company member for the past 3 years have changed my life completely.

by m2m

Aside from CSLA's great mission statement, this organization has done so much for our small niche dance community.

Here's a few examples: Congregating hundreds of people in one room for one passion - dance. Partnering with a dance competition, VIBE, to allow the show to continue and showcase for our community's artistry. And finally, creating an environment for dancers of ALL ages to express themselves freely, especially in this selfish world of "me, me, me."

I don't know anyone in the Culture Shock fam that isn't welcoming, caring, kind, and selfless. Hope that's enough to convince you to vote for CSLA!

Shoutout to Arnel & Allison for making the world a better place with dance. Sending positive VIBE(s) to Sonia, Yosuke, and Anthony!

Culture Shock LA has changed so many lives over the years. Such a selfless company and always wanting to impact the community, I can't even imagine what this company will be able to accomplish with our very own community center. I myself have constantly been pushed and inspired by the leaders in this company over the many years I've danced even before I was a part of it myself, and now actually being in it, I feel such a huge change in my spirits and my motivation to want to spread what CSLA is all about: education, enrichment, entertainment. I love this family and everyone who has ever been a part of it! Thank you CSLA for all that you've done for all of us and for all that you'll do!

I joined the first ever Mighty Shock LA team back in 2009, when I was 10 and this family basically helped me grow. Not only as a dancer, but also as a human. Taught me what ways I can inspire others, and help the youth stay away from trouble and just give them an outlet and a chance to be able to learn new things. I am currently still in the youth team Future Shock LA at the age 17, and I will always want to keep in touch with CSLA. It is an amazing opportunity being able to train with people who inspire me, and people I look up to and just a community who are willing to not only entertain, but reach out to people of all kinds of ages. In the dance community and elsewhere, CSLA has been a big influence to many.

Every Sunday, when I'm on my way to meet up with my Future Shock kids, I pass the room with all the kids from mighty shock, I say hi and they say hello back and I see all their smiles and give a couple of them hugs. I pass by the room where all the tony children from mini shock are practicing, and I interrupt their rehearsal, and endure the slightly annoyed glares of their directors as i take the kids attention away from what they're doing so that they can laugh and play with me for a couple moments. I pass by all the wonderful supportive parents who I've come to know as friends. I see my future shock kids, and give them hugs and high fives right before we start rehearsal. These are my favorite moments, and one of the reasons why Culture Shock LA is so important to me

Our consulting group fully supports our admin, Jasmine, and this wonderful team she's always ranting and raving about at work. She has shown us videos and footage of this troupe, not just dancing, but giving back to their community. We think they're innovative and could really use the space to keep the community involved and thriving. It's enlightening to see how people come together for each other and to see how close they are. They're a close knit family- but also seem to have open arms to everyone. Good luck to you Culture Shock. We are rooting for you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! DeciBio Consulting

Being a part of this organization for 3 years now, I have learned so much about myself as a leader, friend, mentor, dancer, creator and more. I have truly learned to live my life in such a positive outlook and with the community center, there could be much more to preserve in myself but most importantly others. Being able to give back to the community and actually have a hub of safety and security will help all programs the Culture Shock is and can be affiliated with. Let's do this!! The future is ours!

Their "Big Brother/Sister" program they have is awesome! I have known Culture Shock LA since 2003 and I can say for a fact that Culture Shock LA has been a tremendous blessing to all the lives they touch. Throughout the years, Culture Shock LA has hosted (and continues to host) benefit shows, community outreach programs, dance education and continues to push the envelope with dance entertainment.

I have seen Culture Shock LA reach out to the youth, lead by example and mentor them to become the people they are today. I have seen those kids go full-circle from being a student to now leading, directing and humbly giving back to the next generation of children. "Roots before branches"

Personally, I am very thankful for the positive impact Culture Shock LA has had on me and to all in this world. I support everything they do and everything they stand for. Good luck CSLA! Go C3!!!

Through sharing a tidbit of my story, I hope to inspire and encourage any reader to take A MINUTE (ok, maybe 2 ;)) and vote for this amazing dance organization, my dance family Culture Shock Los Angeles (CSLA).

The very first time Dennis (artistic director at the time) asked me to dance by his side was really a dream come true. This company took a broken spirit, lifted me up and put me into a therapeutic environment through some rough times, nurtured me, challenged my body and soul, supported me emotionally, artistically, humbled me, and cultivated me into a better dancer, teammate, and leader. Through CSLA I was given the opportunity to grow, live dreams, create and experience life-changing relationships, and be a support to younger generations with hopes they would be able to receive all the blessings that I was so fortunate to be given. Though I no longer dance with them, their mission to impact the lives of our arts and love starved communities and people continues to inspire and fill my heart. I am forever grateful.

CSLA’s C3 and efforts to bring more arts education to our community is key in improving the lives of our children and our future. Please cast your vote for Culture Shock LA!!

"ARTS IMPROVE ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE: Students with an education rich in the arts have higher GPAs and standardized test scores, and lower drop-out rates—benefits reaped by students regardless of socio-economic status. Students with 4 years of arts or music in high school average 100 points higher on the verbal and math portions of their SATs than students with just one-half year of arts or music. (www.AmericansForTheArts.org)

ARTS SPARK CREATIVITY AND INNOVATION: The Conference Board reports that creativity is among the top 5 applied skills sought by business leaders—with 72 percent saying creativity is of high importance when hiring. The biggest creativity indicator? A college arts degree. Their Ready to Innovate report concludes, “The arts—music, creative writing, drawing, dance—provide skills sought by employers of the 3rd millennium.” Nobel laureates in the sciences are 17 times more likely to be actively engaged in the arts than average scientists (www.AmericansForTheArts.org)

ARTS PROMOTE TRUE PROSPERITY: The arts are fundamental to our humanity. They ennoble and inspire us—fostering creativity, goodness, and beauty. The arts help us express our values, build bridges between cultures, and bring us together regardless of ethnicity, religion, or age. When times are tough, art is salve for the ache (www.AmericansForTheArts.org)"

I remember being a noob, coming fresh from the Philippines. Culture Shock LA had cured my (home)dancesickness because the organization made me feel at home.

"In fact, the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), part of the U.S. Department of Education, released the findings (http://nces.ed.gov/pubs2012/2012014rev.pdf) of the first nationwide arts survey reporting an “equity gap” between the availability of arts instruction as well as the richness of course offerings for students in low-poverty schools compared to those in high-poverty schools, leading students who are economically disadvantaged to not get the enrichment experiences of affluent students." - Dr. Christine Malsbary (excerpt from her article, Standardized Tests are a form of Racial Profiling). Culture Shock LA and building C3 would be a move towards a solution to this equity gap in the arts!!! Please support!

Culture Shock is a family. There are countless words to describe how Culture Shock has impacted my life. What I do admire the most about Culture Show are the people in organization. Leaders, directors, parents, teammates, kids, etc. The people is what make me feel at home everytime. Please vote and help us achieve our dreams to build a home for those in our community. I have been with the Culture Shock LA family since 2009 and they have brought me up to be the person I am now. They have touched the lives of so many people including myself with all the programs they offer through their community outreach, dance education, and professional entertainment. They have provided me a home to express myself and to get away from all the different troubles I have gone through these past years. And I really owe a lot to this organization.

It's essential to have an entity that promotes the development of inspired youth. Their main goal as an organization is to spread positivity to all people. Culture Shock LA is truly deserving of having their own facility and a place to extend their meaningful work. Best of luck CSLA!

Culture Shock Los Angeles is a non-profit professional dance organization built on the foundation of impacting lives and changing communities. I am honored to say that I've been a part of this family and owe my entire career to this company. From the first time shared the stage at the HEAVEN SENT benefit show, I knew this company was something special. What I didn't know was how Culture Shock would help me discover my purpose and chamge my life forever. I am where I am today because of the opportunities Culture Shock gave me and I will never be able to give back all that they've given to me. But what I can do is ask for YOUR help. Please help my family further their mission of education, outreach and entertainment by clicking the link and voting. Culture Shock LA is trying to build a center, a HOME where we can continue to aspire to inspire and use dance as a platform for change For All People. #votela2050 #cultureshockla

Culture Shock has been such a huge integral part of my life. A blessing. This organization comprises of some of the best people the universe can offer that stand so strong as great leaders of this community. Not only does this troupe of dancers possess incredible talent, but moreover, is a family that carries a beautiful MISSION that brings out the best version of everyone, and everyone we have the opportunity to touch. #4allpeople

I go to all of the Culture Shock LA's benefit shows. They always create shows that are meaningful with a positive message. I haven't really seen that in dance shows. Especially using Hip Hop. I know that their staff, the directors, and the dancers are all volunteers. They deserve this grant so they can get a great space to rehearse and provide more opportunities for young people and dancers to create and learn.

The first time my daughters were exposed to hip hop dancing, they were shy and timid. Then after a few years, we finally convinced them to take a shot and try out for MightyShockLA, the 8-12 year old division of CultureShockLA. They were ballet dancers, and transitioning from technical moves to the free, flowing moves of hip hop is not as easy as it sounds. But through the excellent guidance of the leaders of CultureShockLA, they brought out the confidence, ability, and leadership out of my once self conscious girls. Through them, they now teach the next generation by providing the encouragement and inspiration that was afforded to them by this giving group. When you talk about a group that continues to pay it forward selflessly, this is truly the organization that continues to do so. What an amazing LA this would be to have them win this, because the positive influence they provide makes this city a better home to all!

The Culture Shock organization has been one of the main reasons behind why I still thrive in the arts as a professional. From igniting my passion in dance as a kid on Future Shock LA to having so many opportunities as an adult to give back to the community through CS and the arts has bettered my life and made me feel whole again. I love you,Culture Shock!!

Culture Shock LA is made up volunteers that teach and encourage young kids to not only be better dancers but better human beings. They are truly the best kind of role models.
My 13 year old daughter, Malia, is truly blessed to be part of this organization. She has just started her 4th year with this organization and just continues to love it more and more. She continues to learn as a dancer and has made friendships that she holds dear to her heart. CSLA has also taught and encouraged her to be a leader in a positive and loving environment.

So, please, please help this organization by voting for them so they awarded this grant to open a multi-generational, arts-focused community center. Please support their effort. This would be amazing for them.

Culture shock Los Angeles has inspired me in so many ways and has taught me that the expression of art can be so life moving. I know so many youth have been impacted by this organization to be able to have a space where they can completely be free to be themselves without judgement. I fully support the mission and the impact culture shock LA has for our communities and future generations to come.

I'm not a dancer, but appreciate the art as much as one can. What amazes me is their enthusiasm to support the community as a troupe of human beings with amazing dance skills. To go to various school related activities to putting together shows is an art and it cannot be appreciated enough. The members of this community have shown time and time again what it means to support the community and live up to their mission statement. Nothing but love for this group of talented and well respected individuals. Please support this great cause because no one is doing it better than CSLA!

Culture Shock Los Angeles inspires me everyday to be a better artist, friend, educator, and community leader! This group made me first feel and understand the love of hip-hop culture when I was 12 years old and continues to fill my heart now at 23 years old. I hope that with a place like C3, our organization can make a positive impact on the lives of other youth and adults in the LA area, but on a larger scale! I love this family!!

Culture Shock Los Angeles continues to bring kids of all ages opportunities to grow and explore their interest in the arts. Seeing the smiles on the kids faces after taking a dance class, freestyling or performing reminds me that this is a positive impact on their lives.

C3 offers a place for kids to learn and share in different facets of creative expression, something that is hard to find in LA. Keep inspiring Culture Shock LA!
