CicLAvia catalyzes vibrant public spaces, active transportation and good health through car-free streets in Los Angeles County and engages people to positively transform relationships with our diverse communities and with each other.

In one to three sentences, please describe your proposal.

CicLAvia 2016 will expand its open streets program by integrating iconic routes with new ones: Southeast Cities; Northeast San Fernando Valley; the Heart of LA, and Wilshire Blvd. By blending the old with the new, car-free Angelenos can bear witness to social, cultural and economic renaissances happening from one neighborhood to the next. The opportunity to see Los Angeles, up close and personal vs. in a car and through the rear view mirror, redefines the meaning of connection.

Where will you be working? Please be specific (e.g. Third Street Middle School; Boyle Heights; LA County).

Central LA

East LA

San Gabriel Valley

San Fernando Valley

South LA

South Bay

Antelope Valley

County of Los Angeles (countywide)

City of Los Angeles (citywide)

Other (please specify below):

e.g. Third Street Middle School; Boyle Heights; LA County:

Southeast Cities – Huntington Park, South Gate, Lynwood, Florence/Firestone & Walnut Park; Northeast San Fernando Valley - Pacoima, Panorama City, Arleta, & North Hills; Downtown Los Angeles, Wilshire Center, Little Tokyo, Chinatown, Boyle Heights

How do you plan to use these resources to make change? (check all that apply)

Conduct research

Engage residents and stakeholders

Implement a pilot or new project

Expand a pilot or program

Mobilize for systems change

Advocate with policymakers and leaders

Implement and track policy

Other (please specify below):

How will your proposal improve the following “Connect” metrics? (check all that apply)

Rates of volunteerism

Voting rates by race

Adults getting sufficient social & emotional support

Median travel time to work

Attendance at cultural events

Number of public transit riders

Participation in neighborhood councils

Percentage of Angelenos that volunteer informally (Dream Metric)

Government responsiveness to residents’ needs (Dream Metric)

Transit-accessible housing and employment (the share of housing units and percentage of jobs that are located near transit)

Total number of local social media friends and connections (Dream Metric)

Attendance at public/open streets gatherings (Dream Metric)

Residential segregation (Dream Metric)

Access to free wifi (Dream Metric)

Describe in greater detail how you will make LA the best place to connect.

On the thousands of miles of road we travel by car everyday, we connect to Los Angeles via destination points, from point A to point B. CicLAvia shows us what we miss in between those points. CicLAvia presents an almost still photograph of our city and allows us to focus and engage with our built environment and with each other. In essence, we self-propel through our streets using our body’s inertia as pedestrians, bicyclists, skateboarders, roller skaters and other non-motorized forms of movement. There are no windshields to block out the ambient noise of the car’s engine. Instead, it is replaced by the ambient noise of footsteps pounding, skateboards running, bicycle wheels spinning, gears shifting, chains rubbing, horns and whistles sounding, and conversations continuing. We become open to exploring old and new neighborhoods in the safety of a car-free environment, thus rediscovering our city and region as newly-engaged participants.

Initiated in 2010, CicLAvia is now a major force in transforming attitudes and lifestyle behaviors regarding health, civic engagement, active transportation and the environment. These free open-street events have changed the conversation and are now having a direct impact on related local policy issues. As we complete our fifth year and fifteenth event, we remain enthralled by the stories that CicLAvia tells about our city and region. We are a region of more than 10 million people, and a city that spans more than 465 square miles. But four times a year, CicLAvia makes us feel that our city is small enough to explore in one fell swoop. LA is still relatively young, but we have wise souls willing to share experiences and secret treasures.

Please explain how you will evaluate your work.

CicLAvia will evaluate impact on:

- Public space CicLAvia creates for people to connect
- Physical activity increase compared with a normal Sunday (surveys on site)
- Reduction in crime levels (LAPD stats comparing non-CicLAvia days)
- Behavior change towards the use of active transportation (surveys on site and after event)
- Increase in pedestrian and bike use (data from public agency counts)
- Direct impact on local policy changes on active transportation (implementation of local and regional mobility plans)
- Number of participants at CicLAvia and track increase in social media penetration using key platforms (Facebook, Twitter, etc.)

How can the LA2050 community and other stakeholders help your proposal succeed? (check all that apply)

Money (financial capital)

Volunteers/staff (human capital)

Publicity/awareness (social capital)

Infrastructure (building/space/vehicles, etc.)

Technical infrastructure (computers, etc.)

Community outreach

Network/relationship support

Quality improvement research

Hi THarchitecture. The Ballona Bridge is a regional landmark that would be a great destination or starting point. What about informing your proposal with the City's Greenways to Rivers Arterial Stormwater Greenway tool and connect this bridge to the rest of the CItys stormwater corridors-- and so to the LA River and headwaters...would be more equitable and might become a broader watershed scale all-day event with biker return trams at both ends?

Wonder if the CicLAvia guys can handle the longer routes?

Hey CycLAvia you should do a route over the Ballona Creek Pedestrian bridge once it is built!! We need a safe North to South Route Along the Westside of LA connecting Mar Vista, Venice, Culver City, Playa Vista Westchester and Inglewood. A CycLAvia highlighting this route would be good to bring attention to this Area, Good luck with the voting and submission, Cheers! Would love to meet sometime in the future to discuss.

CicLAvia is a great event to illustrate the potential growth and participation possible of residents in the Southern California region toward engaging in "active transportation." Look no further than public transit (Metro and Metrolink) to see the engagement (participation with bicycles aboard trains) of those looking to set aside their cars for a day and elevate their health by engaging in a less stressful and environmentally friendly activity. The CicLAvia organization has optimized their strategy over the years to really engage the public effectively.

Furthermore, for bicycle advocates (such as ourselves -- 'bikecar101) who are advocating for greater 'on-board' bicycle storage space both Metro and Metrolink trains, CicLAvia has inspired us in the following ways:

1) Given us visual displays via social media pictures that show the potential growth (in ridership) of these active modes (public transit) can play in the region.

2) A reduction in our environmental footprint (i.e. reducing GHG) and raising air quality (RAND study) is possible with the participation of open streets events.

3) That not only is there an interest on behalf of those engaging in active transportation, there is a large participation that is representative of the regional population (Southern California).

Our public transit (Metro and Metrolink train) system is vast and unused, with the help of great open streets events, we (bikecar101) hope that awareness of the possible "active modes" of transportation (bicycle, bus, train) will continue to be elevated in the public's eye. We look forward to every CicLAvia open streets event.

This is one of the most important developments that has happened in the past 5 years in Los Angeles. It must be maintained as a cultural institution within this city.

It would also be great to help figure out a route that would go from Hollywood to Burbank/Glendale. There doesn't seem to be any safe way to do this. I sure hope you bring back the Westside routes for 2017 and additional routes for the South Bay and Long Beach.

I've roller skated in every single one except for the last one, which I missed due to injury. They are a lot of fun and I wish you good luck in obtaining your grant.

I was at the Future Cities event last night and the best presentation about the vision for the future of LA was from CicLAVia and re-imagining our streets. It's one of the best things about LA. Thank you!

My brother and I have been doing every event Ciclavia. My (9yr) brother has down syndrome, as we know down syndrome kids have a tendency to be over weight. These events have helped me create a safe environment for him to excersize in a fun for him way. He enjoys being part of the community and especially getting to ride his bike freely. I am so grateful to Ciclavia for the work they do. It truly has helped our family raise a healthy living environment for him. We handled 15 miles beautifly! Can't wait to see how this money will help them improve and impact our communities!!!

I love this event and participate every time it happens. I would love to see longer routes and fewer traffic stops ... and while you're at it, how about let's do it for the WHOLE weekend. It's an awesome event and I continue to tell all my friends about it. Thanks for the great work!
