In one sentence, please describe what your organization does.

:

Los Angeles Flag is a non-profit organization dedicated to uniting our city by establishing a strong civic identity and fostering a sense of civic pride amongst Angelenos throughout the city and around the world.

In one to three sentences, please describe your proposal.

:

Los Angeles is a great city, and every great city deserves a great flag. Our current flag is neither good nor effective and, consequently, has all but faded into obscurity; people don’t know it, and because they don’t know it, they don’t fly it. A well-designed flag, however, will serve as an emblem of unity and pride; it will bring together millions of otherwise disconnected Angelenos by restoring a sense of civic pride and strengthening LA’s ‘brand’ identity throughout the world at large.

Where will you be working? Please be specific (e.g. Third Street Middle School; Boyle Heights; LA County).

Central LA

East LA

San Gabriel Valley

San Fernando Valley

South LA

Westside

South Bay

Antelope Valley

County of Los Angeles (countywide)

City of Los Angeles (citywide)

LAUSD

Other (please specify below):

Other (please specify below):

How will your proposal improve the following “Connect” metrics? (check all that apply)

Rates of volunteerism

Voting rates by race

Adults getting sufficient social & emotional support

Median travel time to work

Attendance at cultural events

Number of public transit riders

Participation in neighborhood councils

Percentage of Angelenos that volunteer informally (Dream Metric)

Government responsiveness to residents’ needs (Dream Metric)

Transit-accessible housing and employment (the share of housing units and percentage of jobs that are located near transit)

Total number of local social media friends and connections (Dream Metric)

Attendance at public/open streets gatherings (Dream Metric)

Residential segregation (Dream Metric)

Access to free wifi (Dream Metric)

Describe in greater detail how you will make LA the best place to connect.

:

Los Angeles is currently undergoing an incredible transformation: Development is booming, neighborhoods are thriving, and the very heart of our city is growing and adapting to meet the needs of an ever-changing 21st century. We are in the midst of a stunning revival and, as such, are the frontrunner to host the Olympic games in 2024. We are on the cusp of something big and all eyes are upon us.

Yet many people – residents and outsiders alike – still consider us to be a fragmented, disconnected city with no heart. But while Los Angeles may not have one central destination, there are scores of individual neighborhoods and enclaves teeming with art, culture, history, and beauty, from Sylmar to San Pedro, Ventura Blvd. to Venice Beach. These urban gems might be separated by miles of broken road and crowded freeways, but they are all part of what makes Los Angeles a complex, unique, and truly unparalleled city.

Our goal, then, is to connect these individual, segregated pockets with a powerful, unifying flag – a simple and distinct emblem that bonds the east siders and the west siders, the rich and the poor, the old and the young; a symbol that belongs to every Angeleno, regardless of neighborhood, race, background, or socio-economic status.

A new flag – one that we can all rally behind – will serve as a symbol for all of Los Angeles, promoting and representing the city itself, while uniting millions of Angelenos around the world. As we continue to lead the way through the 21st century, a new flag will help show the world that, despite our expansiveness and our often-frustrating idiosyncrasies, we are not a disjointed suburban metropolis, but rather an awesome, nuanced, and self-respecting city.

We are focused on connecting Angelenos, raising awareness, and gathering broad support to convince city officials to approve our proposal. Once the initiative is passed, we plan to launch a citywide design competition in search of a new flag – a contest that will undoubtedly connect Angelenos, not only with each other, but with the city as a whole, investing them in the future of Los Angeles by empowering them to participate in the rebranding of their city.

Please explain how you will evaluate your work.

:

We can simply and easily track our progress and support through the metrics built into our website and our community Facebook page. We will be able to further evaluate our progress based on support we garner through change.org.

Our mission is to constantly engage the public, gaining support and attempting to connect with everyone everywhere. Therefore, the effectiveness of this project will be evaluated partially by our ability to target as many neighborhoods, communities, organizations, festivals, etc. as possible. The wider the broadcast, the stronger the message.

The overall success of this project hinges solely on getting the initiative passed – until that happens we can’t officially call for design submissions or adopt a new flag. Therefore, we will constantly be evaluating our work in regards to how many people we’ve reached. Our work will not be done until the city approves our proposal and every single Angeleno is united under a great new flag.

How can the LA2050 community and other stakeholders help your proposal succeed? (check all that apply)

Money (financial capital)

Volunteers/staff (human capital)

Publicity/awareness (social capital)

Infrastructure (building/space/vehicles, etc.)

Education/training

Technical infrastructure (computers, etc.)

Community outreach

Network/relationship support

Quality improvement research

I support this project! Especially with the Olympics coming up this is a perfect way to connect the city and show the rest of the world how great we are. We deserve the olympics and we deserve a new flag!

There's nothing more important, more fundamental, in uniting a people than having an emblem under which to rally. A new flag, one that will encapsulate what it means to live in Los Angeles....to be an Angeleno....is a key factor in connecting our vast and diverse city. It's a basic step we must take; a good flag will give us the motivation and the means to rally together so that we can face what others might deem to be "more important" issues.

Brilliant! To crowd-source everything from awareness of the need, to, eventually, the design .
Building community through common cause

Flags are an enduring symbol of identity. They are iconic, powerful and have the potential to transform a city of disparate parts into a functioning whole. LA is in need of connection and proper representation. a symbol that bind us together as a city & community. As the creative capital of the world, we deserve it.

Engaging artists, designers, and students throughout the city to create a new flag is a perfect way to connect the people of LA...not to mention promoting art, design and civic awareness.

Los Angeles needs to fly a well designed 21st Century flag to create, and promote civic pride. The current flag does not capture the amazing talent, energy, vision, and direction of our ever changing, diverse, and wonderful city!

We are, too! A city-wide design competition will do great things, not only in terms of bringing people together, giving them a vote, and getting them invested in the future of this city, but also educating Angelenos on what GOOD design is, and how it can be effectively and meaningfully incorporated into our civic landscape....ultimately resulting in a more beautiful, unified, and connected city. Thanks for your vote and we look forward to your future design submission!

Thank you! We aim to raise both design awareness and civic awareness....not as two individual, unrelated concepts, but as one connected idea....one powerful and motivating force to engage the people and get them invested in building a better, brighter, and more beautiful LA!

Thank you Nathan. We couldn't agree more. If this initiative passes, we can open up a citywide design competition and engage people from all walks of life throughout Los Angeles in an effort to get EVERYBODY invested and involved in redesigning the future of LA.

We know, tansierra, we know. It IS hideous, which is exactly why people don't know it, and why they don't fly it. But we can change that! With your vote we can redesign the future of LA so that every Angeleno can be united and connected under a great new banner.
