Art of Acting Studio (AOA) is taking down the barriers that prevent all of LA’s citizens from participating in the city’s robust arts community. AOA will deliver 12 one-week Theatre Project residencies for adult female students currently residing in the custody of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LASD) and for male High School Students in the Pitchess Detention Center. These programs will be delivered by professional instructor and a team of Ambassadors, current students and alumni from the Art of Acting Studio.

How does this work on a day to day basis? Each class begins with a progression of physical exercises to stretch and tone the body; voice and speech exercises designed to open their voice, expand the breath and develop strength and clarity in speaking; learning and practicing acting technique through scene work and storytelling. In the class, students will find an opportunity to share their training experience and discoveries in an “open class” setting with invited guests.

Through this work, the studio fulfills its mission of bringing world class faculty and training to those who cannot afford it, while also providing our full time tuition based students with a model for social engagement. This partnership also presents a unique opportunity to serve the mission of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LASD) and Five Keys Charter Schools by encouraging these students to embrace new language and bold ideas. AOA aims to empower participants through the rigorous study of craft. The final “open class” environment provides a ritual for success for students as as well as a moment to reflect, to acknowledge and dream for all participants and stakeholders, as the students receive validation from the peers and the professionals they look to each and every day.

When students are released from the facility, they are invited to participate in a free, monthly, theatre re-entry program at their new artistic home - THE ART OF ACTING STUDIO. AOA will continue to nurture the growth of students both in their art and human growth as they re-enter society.

Please explain how you will evaluate your work.

Based on previous program delivery, the studio recommends evaluation based on 1) attendance 2) participation (in theatre class, for example, did the student write and/or perform during the course of the session) and 3) participation in re-entry program. Student feedback in narrative form is an essential aspect of program evaluation as is feedback from each facility's staff including corrections officers, wardens and program staff.

How can the LA2050 community and other stakeholders help your proposal succeed? (check all that apply)

Money (financial capital)

Volunteers/staff (human capital)

Publicity/awareness (social capital)

Being a former, volunteer & employee of Stella Adler Studio of Acting Studio student I was taught that the growth of an actor & growth of as a human are synonymous. There is nothing more human than giving back to other people of any circumstance. By The Art Acting Studio & Stella Adler Studio continuing their self-less passionate mission work they are not only showing students & alumni but the world what it truly means to grow as a human!

The Art of Acting Studio is an amazing program. Not only is it a program that cultivates talent but as Stella Adler said "Growth as an actor and growth as a human being are synonymous." They grow the spirit of an actor and expand the mind as well. It transforms souls from the inside out, it enlightens people, it lets the imagination be free. They beleive in helping and uplifting people and boy are they amazing!

Everyone, this is SUCH an incredible program that touches the lives of SO MANY!! Stella Adler is an organization that believes that the work that we do outside the studio and helping others, is just as important, if not more so, than the work that we do inside these walls. As an employee of this organization I have seen the work that we do touch so many lives. It's an honor to be a part of and I encourage everyone else to support the work we do. Thanks!

"Growth as an actor and growth as a human being are synonymous". Stella Adler's philosophy makes sense when meditated and practiced daily with an open heart, respecting and sharing with people not as providers of our own personal interests, but as human beings with needs and senses and empathy. Empathy. This dialogue of hearts, this concrete connection with the other and the breaking of the silence and isolation that make our jobs and lives so cruel and harsh at times This program is as truthful as vital.

I recently came home from doing 6yrs in jail/prison. I know about Stella Adler Studio of Acting because they came to where I was at. It's now my family. The women at Rikers Island in NY are so grateful to have had Tommy Susie Joanne and Tom come to us with their program. It helped us grow and sometimes let go of our resentment and guilt and anger. They allowed our real self come out. They allowed us to grow and express. For yjat I will always love them, appreciate them. LOVE YOU ALL.

I work for AOA/Adler and saw this program in action in June at Twin Towers Correctional Facility. Imagine visiting a jail for the first time: you go through one security check point after another. You're asked a series of questions. You must show and verify ID repeatedly. There are gates and locks and doors and procedures that are totally unexpected and totally foreign. The process of just getting into a facility is intimidating to say the least. It does not prime you to have a theatrical experience, to be vulnerable, to be open, to listen to someone else's point of view. Just going into the facility makes you want to sit down and give up. Now imagine that the women who are there day in and day out take the stage i (a linoleum floor to be exact - no curtains or theater finery). They are dressed uniformly in issued jumpsuits. But in just a matter of minutes, their willingness to open their hearts and souls, their willingness to share their stories and their fears and dreams, their willingness to connect and reach out and share - all of this makes you forget where you are. You are no longer in a jail facility because you have been transported by a fellow human being who is telling a passionate story. I'm so proud to work for an organization that has created an utterly unique program that affects participating artists and audience members alike. Please vote and help us serve more people through theater and art
