:

Thanks to recent advances in digital technologies, there has been a renewed enthusiasm for all things 3-D. From record-breaking box office returns of 3-D movies to the new public interest in virtual reality, 3-D is back in the spotlight.

But most people aren't aware that stereoscopic imaging has a very rich history that dates back to the 19th century. We want to create a center to celebrate the work of the many talented artists, photographers and filmmakers who have used the medium of 3-D as their creative tool, and to educate the public on the art and science of stereography, from it's analog beginnings in the 1830s to the immersive digital realms of the future.

Our goals include:

- A Museum of permanent collections on display to educate about the history of 3-D art and science.

- A Gallery of curated exhibits by recent and current 3-D content creators.

- A Theater to screen 3-D films and other related cinematic works, and to host lectures and presentations.

- A Library of 3-D books, movies, and other media.

- A Classroom devoted to teaching the techniques and methods of 3-D image creation through classes and workshops for the public, including special outreach and educational programs for youth and seniors.

Research has shown that students who study STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) become better problem solvers, innovators, inventors and logical thinkers. Studies also show that Students who study the arts are more likely to be academic achievers with strong skills in creativity and innovation, critical thinking and problem solving, and communication and collaboration. Arts specific education is on the decline, but arts connected to STEM (STEAM) through mutually-reinforcing objectives deepens learning in both areas.

Additionally, the use of stereoscopic 3-D in the classroom has repeatedly proven to provide markedly higher rates of comprehension and retention of information by students, yet 3-D is not widely understood or implemented by educators or industries.

Our initiative will provide a contextual and factual foundation for an increase in the creation and use of 3-D content by the Los Angeles population. This knowledge will benefit the growing numbers of LA residents who will pursue careers in the numerous fields that are rapidly implementing 3-D imagery, including entertainment, medicine, design, and education.

Please explain how you will evaluate your work.

:

Our work will be directly evaluated by the public who engage in our activities. The people who attend our classes, workshops and presentations will be given the opportunity to provide feedback that will be used to shape future programs.

The many works and media created by our students will be exhibited in various public venues including art galleries, film festivals, and online, where the Los Angeles community at large will be able to see, experience, and comment.

Our internal evaluation will be based on measuring levels of continuing engagement with the public, growth of class and workshop sizes, attendance numbers at our events, and public demand for increased activities

How can the LA2050 community and other stakeholders help your proposal succeed? (check all that apply)

Money (financial capital)

Volunteers/staff (human capital)

Publicity/awareness (social capital)

Infrastructure (building/space/vehicles, etc.)

Education/training

Technical infrastructure (computers, etc.)

Community outreach

Network/relationship support

Quality improvement research

VR - Virtual Reality is having a great revival and 3D-SPACE has a wealth of knowledge and history to offer people who want to learn more. 3D and Virtual Reality allow any subject to be explored and learnt having a great impact on young minds, especially those that live within the areas of LA and with the right inspiration can go on to work in many areas of the entertainment industry and silicon valley. VR allows children to instantly visit anywhere in the world or out of this world, without leaving their chair. It can have a great impact on their education and inspire them to do great things.

LA is THE place for 3D - children all around the world remember seeing images in 3D through their View-Master viewers, there is no better way to entertain and educate than through the medium of 3D. The wealth of 3D history that Eric has available to display and teach with is astounding and one of a kind, most of the items exist no where else in the world, and for that makes this project a way to bring people from outside LA to bring wealth and prosperity to support the LA community.
Best wishes Eric I know you are the man to pull this off.

3D has always pushed engineers to think differently, to see differently, to imagine the world in a different away to foreign yet so normal we don't even notice it.....To have a center devoted for the creation of 3D would allow young creatives and entrepreneurs to have a place they can use to grow their skills and understanding of the subject. There's no one better to operate this center then Eric Kurland.

What this city needs is a great location for 3D image creators to share, teach, learn, instruct, and revive the appreciation and continuation of 3D imaging. Someplace that offers a museum, a continual series of workshops, lectures, lessons, exhibits, still and video creations from the beginning of 3D photographic imaging through the technology of today. A place like the Getty or LACMA or the Armond Hammer, but strictly centered on 3D imagery. A location with the instruments from the past to the prototypes of the future. A place that recognized the legends who have contributed to our progress in this field and a place that cultivates the minds of today, who will leave their mark in ways unimagined.

Los Angeles has been a center of 3D filmmaking since the 1950s, and we need to encourage the teaching, archiving and further development of 3D for future generations. I believe the 3-D Space is a wonderful institution to support. I look forward to seeing it grow, Tom Sito

This would be a wonderful investment and eminently appropriate for Los Angeles to have such a place headquartered in this city of projected dreams.

The $100,000 Grant for 3D Space is a very worthy and worthwhile use for your grant money. There is very little educational opportunity in the 3D world, to learn the history, techniques, and application of 3D to modern film making. This grant will afford continued operation of a worthy 501C3 non-profit organization, who's volunteers truly work tirelessly to promote education and experimentation in the 3D world. Your money could not go to a better cause.

Thank you for your support Tom! We have, in the past, given lectures on creative 3-D filmmaking at USC, UCLA, and CalArts, and look forward to continuing and expanding our collaborations with LA's colleges and universities. In fact, we have just begun mentoring a student in UCLA's animation program.
