:

Substantial research and scholarly articles have touted the benefits of bilingual and multilingual education as a means of increasing connectivity among groups, overcoming stereotypes, creating stronger social bonds and increasing both the intelligence and emotional state of students as they become adults.

Education Secretary Arne Duncan has regularly voiced his support and the need for additional resources to be devoted to dual language instruction as a means for creating more well-rounded native English speakers and increasing the graduation and success rates of English-language learners.

The 90-10 model, which is based off Canada's model of teaching native English speakers French and vice versa, has shown that those immersed in a two-way language educational model from elementary school often outperform their peers who are only learning in one language, including in language arts and math.

The California Department of Education lists 201 current schools that offer some form of dual immersion, 58 of which are located in Los Angeles County, which represents almost 30% of all dual immersion programs in California. This year, the Association of Two-Way & Dual Language Education (ATDLE), a national organization providing resources and implementation for dual immersion programs throughout the United States, awarded Patrick Henry Elementary with its Certificate of Excellence Award for dual language education. Only one school is given the award per year out of more than 1,000 dual immersion schools overseen by ATDLE.

The award and longstanding success of Patrick Henry Elementary demonstrates why the Patrick Henry Foundation is positioned to make Los Angeles the best to learn. Last year, we funded iPads and 3D printers for two pilot projects at Patrick Henry Elementary and neighboring Keller Middle School. The iPads are being used to incorporate digital learning methods into the dual language model with great success. Likewise, the 3D printer pilot project has enabled increased creativity and art through experiential learning.

Additional resources will allow the Patrick Henry Foundation to convert the successes of the pilot project into fully funded ongoing educational opportunities throughout Los Angeles.

The Patrick Henry Foundation also created a program entitled Beyond the Bell that offers a variety of enrichment courses both before and after school, including chess, music and engineering. Extra funding would increase this programs reach.

Please explain how you will evaluate your work.

:

Our board regularly meets to evaluate the progress of the foundation. We have internal policies and procedures in place to track the data with respect to how our donations have benefited the school and what programs are working more than others.

Fortunately, we have been able to target highly dedicated teachers and staff members who volunteer their time because they want the additional educational tools and resources the foundation can provide outside the normal channels from a publicly funded request. As a result, the staff and teachers, who are liaisons to the board, monitor and report back on the programs implemented by the foundation, which we then double check.

The foundation also conducts annual surveys of staff, faculty, students and parents of the schools we service in order to obtain feedback. Our 2014 survey results, in conjunction with the California Office to Reform Education (CORE) survey, demonstrates Patrick Henry is one of the highest rated programs.

My husband and I are bilingual. There are many benefits, as studies have shown, that come from learning two languages. We are grateful for programs like Patrick Henry's that embrace; diversity, culture, innovation, and community. I believe this sets a great foundation for children that will go onto becoming great contributors to our society. We need more programs like these that will make a lasting impact. This is why Patrick Henry will benefit from a grant like this one. It will be a gift that keeps on giving to communities all around.

All four of my children attend Patrick Henry. The school is rich in cultural awareness, but also in willingness to embrace technology and science in the classroom. A grant such as this would be hugely beneficial to our students and allow our teachers the resources they need to create an inspiring curriculum.

My two children attend Patrick Henry Elementary, recognized as one of the best dual immersion schools in the state. This grant would allow the students and staff to increase their educational and enrichment activities in core areas such as science, computer skills, engineering and more. The students graduating from this school go on to achieve great things as culturally diverse multi-lingual students and providing them with additional resources will only strengthen their potential to make LA the best place to learn.

This is a wonderful opportunity for the faculty, staff and students at Patrick Henry. As a researcher, I am well aware of the positive implications of a bilingual education and strongly support this grant initiative. Frankly, I'm amazed that LA County doesn't have more programs like this! Patrick Henry is truly a model program and with additional financial support could create innovative and sustainable programs and experiences for students. Please fund this proposal to expand the reach of the successful pilot programs at Patrick Henry.

Students from our program will demonstrate leadership in our communities based on dual language and technology aptitude. Students and teaching staff directly benefit from the resources provided by the Patrick Henry Foundation. Our students and teachers work hard and the results are proof. Fund this amazing program which molds our children to be culturally-competent, linguistically and technologically-abled.

We fought to get our kids into Patrick Henry (as many parents do every year) because we wanted them to have a leg up-one thing that would make them stand out from other candidates in the workplace and other citizens in the community. What makes Patrick Henry such a unique and special learning community are the faculty and staff. The amazing dual-immersion program wouldn't be what it is without them and this grant would allow us to support them to bring new and innovatove programs into the classroom.

"When you invest your time, you make a goal and a decision of something that you want to accomplish. Whether it's make good grades in school, be a good athlete, be a good person, go down and do some community service and help somebody who's in need, whatever it is you choose to do, you're investing your time in that. (Nick Saban)" Therefore I choose Patrick Henry.

My husband and I enrolled our two daughters at Patrick Henry because we believe that being bilingual in today's society would give them an edge for their future career. Living in California, it made sense for our children to be able to speak and read Spanish. However, the benefits of bilingual education have far surpassed any of our former expectations. My daughters' global perspective is so far beyond their friends who attend English only schools, I am constantly impressed and humbled by my children's cultural awareness and sensitivity. I believe the bilingual education my children are receiving at Patrick Henry is truly preparing my daughters to be to be global citizens.

I first observed Patrick Henry in 2003, as part of the observation hours needed in my Master's Degree program. Once I visited, I knew that this would be the school I would place my children, when the day came when I had children. Twelve years later, two of my children attend Henry, and my last child will start at Henry in the fall of 2016. The skills that our children are learning are incredibly important, and will help them compete once they finally reach working age in our global economy. The teachers are passionate and spend most of their time at work. (It's ok-many of the teachers' children attend Henry as well.) The community is very family oriented and works to provide the best for the students. Should Henry receive this grant, the items purchased would be well-taken care of, and would be put to immediate and good use.

We have two children at Patrick Henry and we are a fully NON-Spanish speaking family...excuse me, I meant we are a family that had no Spanish speakers and now we have two (and two parents trying really hard!). Once we heard about Patrick Henry, we knew we had to get our kids in the program. When we heard about the demand and limited space, we moved to the neighborhood just to get our first, then second child in to the school. It is an amazing program and it is a gift to our children to be able to learn another language. We are so incredibly proud of them, the school and all of the amazing staff that make it happen every day. In a world full of misconceptions culturally, we hope this gives our children the empathy and understanding of the wonderful cultural diversity of our great city and state.

We moved into the neighborhood specifically to send our daughter to Patrick Henry. Being bilingual parents, we know of the importance of being able to speak more than one language, especially here in Los Angeles. We are happy with our choice of schools and the teachers we have had the pleasure to meet!

I have two children at Henry and plan to send my third. When my oldest started 5 years ago, parents at other schools in the district didn't know about the program. Now, when I tell other parents where in LBUSD my kids attend, they say, "Oh, the dual immersion school! How can I get in?"

My husband and I chose Henry because we wanted our kids to be prepared as global citizens. Not only are my kids bilingual, they are gaining an understanding of cultures not their own. I say cultures (plural) because they are seeing the diversity within the United States and also in Spanish-language cultures. Our teachers come from a variety of backgrounds and are truly excellent in their vocation. They have high standards for our kids and are led by the progressive vision of the program, our principal, and our school district.

But Patrick Henry is more than a school, it's a community. Our teachers and staff work together to challenge the students, move forward with new ideas, and welcome all students. Our Patrick Henry Foundation has already contributed to our culture of community and as a parent I would wholeheartedly trust them with the resources to implement the vision of the school.

Patrick Henry is leading the way in Los Angeles County as a model learning environment for fostering and developing students with 21st Century skills. The work at Henry centers around the importance of developing scholars with strong communication skills. The staff and faculty at the school work collaboratively to ensure there is a vertical alignment of academic and social skills that build like a staircase to prepare students for college and/or careers. At the core, a strong foundation of what it means to be a bilingual student is nurtured through authentic experiences that celebrate diversity. This work is evident in the number of families that year after year seek enrollment at Patrick Henry. Students from a diverse ethnic background call Henry School their home. Students are happy to attend and learn at this great school. Neighboring school districts considering to expand their own dual language immersion programs look to visit Henry to gather what makes this dual -immersion program so unique. You have a collective group of educators and administrative staff that belief in global citizenship and work together to create learning opportunities for their students. Imagine what this school could accomplish with additional resources. Please support the amazing work of the staff at Patrick Henry Elementary.

What makes Patrick Henry Elementary School (PH) so special for our family and our community is that it provides a cultural education for our two boys that goes way beyond what we can provide at home. Since we do not speak any other languages in our home, we are extremely grateful that our children are able to develop fluency, appreciation, and empathy with people that speak other languages. This is particularly important in Long Beach where nearly half of the population now speaks Spanish citywide.

Our children get a great deal of education and enrichment in our home. From athletics to gardening, games to travel, language and science, our kids get a tremendous amount of supplemental education outside the classroom. However, their study of a second language and the ability to use it on a day-to-day basis with their classmates is an incredible gift that we cannot provide in the home. While we are able to read with them in Spanish and help with homework, it is the learning community of their peers at PH, and the added cultural activities that they participate in with their peers that sets the learning experience apart from anything that we could provide in the home or through an after school program.

After being placed on the wait list with 257 other families, we were thrilled to accept a late enrollment opportunity at Patrick Henry Elementary School because it is THE model dual immersion program. We believe Patrick Henry is cultivating our next generation of leaders with cross cultural skills and empathy that can not be achieved without dual immersion. Our son, a brand new Kindergartener, is inspiring our entire family (even monolingual grandparents!) to more deeply connect with our neighbors in the greater Long Beach area by embracing Spanish language and culture.

We were moving into the area about 6 months ago and researched various neighborhoods and school. After an extensive research and talking to local Parents Patrick Henry seemed to stand out in many ways and hence we specifically bought a house which was assigned to Patrick Henry. now that our son has attended kindergarten for about a month, We are more than pleased with our decision. Athe gift of dual immersion is going to be an asset to our child. but what pleases me most is we are a great community of parents, teachers and administrators constantly looking to improve the learning experience of our kids. My son loves going to school.
Any ideas to bring more than just dual immersion to kids is always welcome. I really appreciate the focus on research and action rather than just rhetoric. I feel confidant this will help my son become a better and giving citizen of our community and the world outside of it.

The youngest of our three children has attended Patrick Henry since kindergarten. We are an "English only" home and our two other children did not attend a dual immersion school. This unique perspective allows us to appreciate the tremendous gift our son has received in his dual-immersion education. He is part of a bilingual, bi-literate, multi-cultural, forward-thinking, academic-minded community that is offering him everything our other children received in their traditional schools plus so much more. We are very lucky to be part of such a wonderful program.

Patrick Henry is opening up two worlds to every child that attends. Students not only learn two languages but they learn multiple cultures. Being bilingual and culturally sensitive is such a bonus to all the students because they live in the largest Spanish speaking county in the United States. So fortunate to be able to open many doors for our children.

Having my child attend Patrick Henry was one of the best decisions my husband and I have ever made. My daughter is challenged in Spanish and English and achieve the highest standards possible. She has the opportunity to be involved in programs and activities that deepen her understanding of the Spanish language. She is preparing to become a contributing member of society where she will be able to fully understand two languages. Patrick Henry provides a wonderful opportunity for my child to learn in a welcoming and nonthreatening environment.

Enrolling in Patrick Henry was the best decision we ever made. I've never seen a school so involved in a child's education. From parent involvement to enthusiastic teachers, everyone at Patrick Henry is invested in the program. I feel like the educators there and the parents of all the students are giving our children the most important gift we could: a well-rounded, diverse, and supportive education.

My husband and I put a lot of thought in enrolling our son at Patrick Henry Elementary. We were fortunate to have our "school of choice" application selected and approved last fall. Our son is currently a first grader and his experience has been very positive, not only is he becoming fully bilingual / bi-literate, but cultural awareness is introduced naturally and in a relevant manner. My son has also participated in the after school "Beyond the Bell" courses, as well as the Summer Camp opportunities. We understand and value the unique educational opportunity our son receives every day at Patrick Henry. We are most appreciative of the dedication and collaboration among the teachers. We are excited to know that a potentail grant can further enhance the educational opportunities and tools available to all Patrick Henry students. I know the commitment by teachers and parents will make a success of this opportunity. Thank you.

We are very fortunate to have both of our sons attending Patrick Henry Elementary. The parent and teacher involvment is incredible. I am always inspired at how we are working together constantly to make our childrens dual immersion education the best it can possibly be. My boys have quickly learned to become bilingual and I know this will serve them later in life as well as teaching them on a daily basis to have a cultural perspective in the area we live as well as our extended family that live elsewhere. A highly recommended program we find invaluable to the growth and development of our boys.

I feel blessed to have my children attend Patrick Henry. The culture is so rich and everyone feels like family. Our two daughters are fortunate to participate in the dual immersion program at Patrick Henry. They are given a chance to embrace education with a wider perspective in our uniquely multi-cultural state. Patrick Henry Dual Immersion Program is the best of it's kind. Teachers and parent involvement work well to provide educational programs and events that enhance student learning, culturally, educationally, and personally. We are tremendously grateful for having the privilege and opportunity to expose our daughters to this sort of education. They are taught by passionate teachers, who work very hard and who strongly believe in the program. I wish every child could have this opportunity. Please fund this proposal. It is a great cause.

After hearing about Patrick Henry and the dual immersion program I was determined that my daughter become a student. We quickly looked to move to the area and PH became our home school. My daughter is now in 1st grade and is thriving in Spanish and loves going to school. She has inspired her older brother to take Spanish in high school and has opened the door to communication in Spanish in our family home. We are so pleased with the commitment level of the teachers and the support from parents and how the community values and respects all cultures and diversities. As a supporter of the PH Foundation, I believe that with more funding we can grow this program to inspire more schools and create more opportunity.
