Float the Boat for Singing Together in NYC!

idea by ayentran

Overview of Idea

We want to float and sing on a sculptural boat on Jamaica Bay in New York City. The boat is made from old docks, trees and fabric. We’ll ferry you out to the glowing dome and host guest musicians to teach their songs at free and open events for anyone to float and learn.

The Specifics: What will the $5,000 fund?

We want to hold a series of free and open events in July and August for people to get out into the water and learn songs together. This project aims to provide direct interaction with water and singing in New York City. Labor to repair the boat is volunteer, docking space is donated by Marina 59, and everything we can make from re-used materials we do, but some things still cost money.

Materials, hardware, rope, transpo, tools to repair from the winter’s damage: 1550
Rig up an inverter and car batteries to keep the lights on, lanterns, lightbulbs: 350
Pay a skipper and rent a boat to ferry people into the bay for 6 events: 1350
Pay musicians to teach their songs on the craft: 900
Folks to run entry gate / event help: 850

I just felt transported by the video alone. Good luck. I hope I get to join this special experience this summer.

Singing together has been part of movements for a long long time, but many of us these days don't have access to that feeling of power and freedom that comes from combining voices in a shared space. What could we accomplish if we could tap into that kind of empowerment? I'm voting for this because I want to sing on this boat.

Thank you so much for posting this--it's exactly the feeling I want to share with people. When you combine that amazing feeling of shared song with the freedom of floating out on the bay it feels so liberating and surreal.

When you see the songboat lit up on the harbor, and hear the voices drifting out of it, it's like a vision from another time. A'yen's passion for bringing people together through song makes every performance magical. I'd love to see this project rebuilt this summer. Truly one of the more unique art events I've had the pleasure of taking part in.
